[Events of our partner] China@Home Webinar: “China’s Most Powerful Weapon – Export Controls and Their Impact on Europe and the USA”

Shortly after Donald Trump's second inauguration at the beginning of last year, he threatened to impose high tariffs on the EU, Canada, Mexico, and China.

While most nations attempted to reduce their tariff burden through negotiations, the trade dispute with the People's Republic escalated. By early summer 2025, Trump had increased tariffs on goods shipped from China to the US to 145%. At the same time, sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment and high-performance chips to China were further restricted. Beijing responded with retaliatory tariffs of 125% and its most powerful weapon – export controls on critical raw materials and rare earth elements.

Even though these export controls are primarily directed against the US, they also affect German companies and require them to have a deeper understanding of licensing processes and to develop new approaches to de-risking critical raw materials.

Although these export controls are primarily aimed at the US, they also affect German companies and require them to develop a deeper understanding of licensing processes and new approaches to de-risking critical raw materials.
