Workshop: “Images of China in Science”
Building. Reflecting. Understanding.
What do our inner images of China look like – and how do they shape scientific collaboration? Our perceptions of other cultures influence how we communicate, cooperate, and conduct research – often without us even noticing. In this interactive workshop, we will explore how China is present in our minds – and what this means for everyday academic life.
Core reflection questions:
What shapes my image of China?
How does it influence my attitude toward international cooperation?
Which experiences contrast with my expectations – and what lessons can be drawn for the future?
Using the LEGO® Serious Play® (LSP) method, we will make thought processes literally tangible. Participants will build symbolic models to make individual perceptions, inner images, and experiences around the theme “China in Science” visible and discussable. This method fosters perspective shifts, opens new access to often implicit knowledge, and enables in-depth dialogue on equal footing. The joint building process creates an open and creative atmosphere in which even complex or sensitive topics can be addressed constructively.
Objectives:
Reflection on personal and societal images of China
Exchange of experiences and strengthening of intercultural competence in research and teaching
Development of practical strategies for successful intercultural collaboration
Inspiration for more empathy, openness, and cooperation in international academic contexts
Who is it for?
For researchers, lecturers, international project staff, and anyone engaged with China in research, teaching, or administration – regardless of prior experience or discipline.
